Creative Crisis and Some Life Lemons

The edits of the first erotic story for the Pleasure project are done, thanks to my editor Steph. It was fun to write, but I got held back by the cover issue–I usually have a clear view of how the final book should look like (sometimes even before the actual book is written), but this time my brain gave me a massive creative ‘fuck you, I’m frying in here!’. So I spent the last few days on stock image websites to get something, something, that would make my mind go yes! this one!

But nope.

i_nope

Nada.

I had to google women’s erotica covers, and peek at the wonderful yet now discontinued Erotica Cover Watch blog, and read reviews of books in the women’s erotica genre while exploring cover lists like this one on Goodreads (the only thing I learned besides the standard [reader expectations?] for erotic romance being body parts, was that many people sometimes were lured into reading the book by its cover [occasionally coupled with delicious title.])

Now, erotic romance isn’t exactly my primary goal here — it’s more than that. It is an addition to a bigger work, not a completely separate book entity, which could be both trouble and a successful experiment.

While the first story is mostly an explicit sensuous scene (which serves as kind of a prologue to Falaha’s Journey Into Pleasure short series), the second one (I’m currently 2222 words into it) is more of a romance with additional worldbuilding, because these episodes take place in a big detailed science fiction universe and are set somewhere after Episode #83 and before the Epilogue of the Falaha’s Journey trilogy, hence Pleasure series is actually Book 3.5, and in the end the second story might not end up in a(n overly) steamy encounter — we’re talking about people’s relationships, not blind porn. The second episode is about courtship and is particularly hard to write due to circumstances of characters involved. Well, not that they can’t hit it in the later episodes of this work and they probably will. It’s good to have all sides of relationship dynamics besides bedroom play in the romance-themed story.

The good thing about Episode #2? I already have the cover idea for this one…

I even have cover ideas for the Rjg, with the story still in such a puny state.

So if I will not find the suitable image for the first story, I’ll have to go with the photo that I have in reserve.

Tsk.

Falaha’s Journey: Perseverance (Book 3)

Welcome to the series grand finale!

“A drop hits the surface of water, creating ripples that propagate outward. The feeling of space-time fold resonance remains, fluctuating within my soma. Another fierce drop creates more ripples. The monster halts, listening.”

Perseverance-cover

A monster awakens from its slumber.

A gruesome discovery has attracted the attention of the most powerful being in the enemy force.

A strange encounter will change the destiny of every species involved.

The allied forces are gathering for a rescue attempt, but will their combined strength be enough to escape from, let alone defeat, their worst nightmare?

How to Create Fictional Science

Planetary system development (artist’s impression)

So you want to add an imaginary scientific discipline or two into your science fiction or fantasy story. It might be necessary for you as an author, and not all of the material will be incorporated into the story. Or, you actually need that set for any particular character you are developing. Anyway, it’s a part of worldbuilding.

You can outline the discipline in brief or give it a more deep and detailed sketch—whatever the story needs, and go have some brainy fun.

What your notes on imaginary sciences (as well as the professions, vocations and intellectual pursuits—don’t forget that science is done by people/other intelligent entities*) should include?

Here’s a list of the elements you’ll need to put some thought into:

1. A methodological introduction — a justification of desirability of a particular science discipline, its subject and method; of possibilities for its practical application and use.

2. Define a place of this scientific discipline among a number of other disciplines – existing and/or imaginary.

3. Development of a categorical apparatus of science, the introduction of relevant terms and their relationships.

4. As rigorous as possible definitions of these terms, including different interpretations of those by any of the possible scientific schools.

5. A brief illustration — excerpts from the alleged writings on a particular subject. Quoted text(s) may be imaginary (as is your new scientific discipline) – but they must be appropriate to the nature and objectives of the discipline in question and demonstrate its categorical apparatus in action.

6. A brief (or not) characteristics of general position in science, its main achievements, contradictions, unresolved problems, creative perspectives, as well as the main characteristics of schools, trends and directions of the science – in their struggle, controversy, etc.

7. Recommendatory bibliography — with a brief description and evaluation of the most noteworthy and fundamental research, that somehow prepares (prepared—yes, history!) the creation of this science.

Summer Encounters of the Close Kind

The following post was brought to you by a pantsless author sipping non-alc beer out of an ice-chilled can tucked between her boobs, from the depths of the fridge. The Cat and the Husband are no longer ali… No, wait… The beer supplies are still in grave danger.

All the pre-release stuff gets me pretty stressed. That coupled with a broken AC and heat levels of +29 C in the house and above +32 C in the shade outside drive me nuts. Slowly, painfully…

This is still May, FFS. What’s with all the intense weather?! Sorry, Sun, this is not what I meant when I set on a journey to rise heat levels of my fiction. Go away.

So. Falaha’s story. It will get six or more special episodes set years after the main story. While they add to the overall world and characters, these are being written purely for secksy fun (ok, I admit I wanted to explore the behind-the-doors kind of stuff of the culture(s) I invented). Currently I made it thru the first tale out of six, which pictures Falaha and Eyuran’s relationship when they are grown. Romance, erotica, science fiction — what’s not to love, ladies (and gents who’s into that)?

This is not what I usually write, yet there’s no discomfort in this kind of thing. After all, it can get people into reading the main story, or invite the main story readers who not shy away from erotica to take a peek into the ‘hidden’ side of that fictional Universe.

That’s the plan, at least. To have fun.

Whether I publish this add-on or not, I’ll decide if I survive the heat. Summer heat that is. (I must, there’s the next novel to write!)
